Hebrews chapter 11 verses 6 – 7 says this: “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
Noah accomplished a significant witness, persevering for a very long time under horrific conditions. His witness was of sterling quality and we would do well to try to match this.
A lot has been said and written about these verses in relation to Salvation, Grace and “Works” but the more I have spent in study of Scripture the more I have realised that often these two little verses are not read in conjunction with the complete teaching of the whole cannon of Scripture.
My thoughts today however are not in this area but are moving towards the little word “faith”. Without faith it is impossible to please God, so faith is vital.
Modern materialism has changed the meaning of the word faith and now will tell us that faith is believing in something where there is no evidence. So this leads their argument nicely on to saying that I as a Christian am simply believing in something to make me feel better but it has no evidence or substance.
Clearly this is a Sigmund Freud argument but it works both ways – an atheist may well be believing by faith ( since there is no evidence to prove God does not exist) that there is no God simply to get away from having to face Him one day!! The atheist’s position is simply to give them comfort. So this Freud argument collapses completely since it can be used either way.
The real point is that as a Christian I DO have loads of evidence to support what I read in the Bible, from creation to miracles, from the life of Jesus to our origin, purpose, morality and destiny right through to how starting a relationship with the Living God actually does change lives today in 2018 in a miraculous way. The evidence goes on and on and as John said in his Gospel “ these things I have written so that you might believe that Jesus is the son of God and that by believing you might have life in his name” ie, here, he says, is the evidence for you.
All I need to do is test the evidence which I have done and it stands all tests, every time.
It is on this evidence that I base my faith and it is this evidence that helps me stand by my faith in God and debate anyone who holds a different view.
Have a great week
