standing fast

Good morning and Happy new year to all readers of this blog

Colossians chapter 1 v 4 says: “since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints”

This verse appears in the middle of a longish introductory sentence by which the apostle Paul lays the groundwork for his appeal to the members of the church at Colossae, an appeal that he does not voice until chapter 2. The problem facing this young church was that they were in danger of being cheated . . . through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ .In other words, conditions were such that they were showing signs of believing ungodly ideas promoted by outsiders. As a careful study of the phrase “the basic principles of the world” reveals, these ideas or philosophies had their origins in demons.

However, Paul opens his letter with positivity and encouragement, letting its recipients know that they already have what it takes to stand firm in the faith. If they keep their eyes on the hope set before them, they will endure even this severe trial.

As we go about our regular activities and work, we are bombarded by all sorts of views and language and activity that can so easily take us away from the truth and the hope that we have.

However what was true for this young church is true for you and me today – keep close to our faith ( which as John reminds us is based on evidence and has a strong bed rock) and keep our eyes on the hope the Bible gives us and we too will endure our troubled times.

Have a good day, week, month and year and beyond till He comes.

Mark
